Well, party people, my summer is officially over.  The heat, not so much, but the fun times of hanging out with my kid all day and doing fun stuff (like getting cherry slushes from Sonic and heading to the pool) are done until summer rolls around again next year.  My classes for the fall started yesterday, and I can already tell that this semester is going to be a doozy.  Who knew that ART of all things could be so crazy and busy and stressful?  I'll have to remember that next time I go back to school.  Oh wait, am I getting ahead of myself?  I should probably focus on surviving this degree first before I worry about any future ones, right?  Right.

Anyway, despite the insanity the next four months of my life will undoubtedly bring, I'll do my best to keep up with this blog of mine.  I just wanted to ask you now that if you see lots of typos or random ramblings of incoherent thoughts, please forgive me.  That's the lack of sleep talking.

PS: Now would probs be a great time to follow me on Instagram (you know you want to!).  I'll most likely be posting quick ootd pictures there on days when I won't have time to do a full blog post here. Just fyi and stuff in case you're interested!  :)  -d

Well hello you!  I bet you came by because it's Wednesday and you know its time for the Fatshion Faceoff, right?  (Or if you're a first-timer that stumbled here via whoknowswhere, click the link at the top of the page to find out what the Fatshion Faceoff is all about!)  Anyway, this week's challenge item was chosen by me and I picked... a patterned (or printed skirt)!  Wanna see how I styled mine?

necklace, ring - Forever21 | top (similar), L - H&M | belt (similar), XL - Target
skirt, UK18 - bday gift from Hannashoes, 39.5 - Miu Miu via Net-a-porter sale

The skirt I'm wearing today was given to me for my birthday by my friend Hanna.  I love the pattern and of course, the awesome pleats.  School is starting very soon for me and I've been running around like a crazy woman trying to get ready, so I kept things simple and casual paired it with this new shirt I picked up from H&M.  I actually scored several great basic shirts from there recently, and I really love the mustardy color of this one.  Who knew H&M had so many cute, simple tops?

Anyway, now that you've seen my take on a patterned/printed skirt, make sure you clickety click on the links below to see how the other Fatshion Faceoff girls styled theirs!  You might have heard already that LuAnne is taking a break from her blog, and sadly that means a break from the Fatshion Faceoff.  We wish her the best, and look forward to her return to the blogging world! :)

top, XL - Lauren by RL via Macys | dress, XL - Forever21+ | sunnies - Rayban
bag - thrifted | sandals - Crown Vintage via DSW

I wore this sweet denim on denim ensemble to run errands the other day and wouldn't you know it, I left my phone at home on accident.  It seriously kind of freaked me out, you guys!  Like, what would happen if I got a flat tire or something bad happened?  Well, something bad did happen.  Walmart was out of skirt hangers, and I didn't have my phone on me to tweet my disgust.  I also couldn't take a picture of this awesome outfit and post it to Instagram to make myself feel better, either.  In other words, I just wanted to let you know that I think I'm too attached to my iPhone and if we're going to be friends, I think you should know that about me.

So, y'all know that leather skirts (either real or not) are slowly but surely becoming one of the biggest trends of A/W '12 season, right?  They've started popping up in the shops online, so I decided to get in early on the look and test a couple out.  I've heard that the one from New Look isn't so fab, but the ones offered from SimplyBe and Forever21+ looked promising, so I ordered one of each to see which one I liked best (and might be keeping).

First up, the SimplyBe PU Box Pleat Skirt in Faux Leather in a US18.  It's currently offered in sizes up to US28.  I'd never ordered from Simply Be before, so I went with my standard size US18.  The price is $65.00 (although I had used a discount code, so I paid less and got free shipping).

fabric close-up // side view

actual fit on me*

I like this skirt!  The craftsmanship is really good, and the fabric is a very good quality.  The fabric, while somewhat thin, actually feels a lot like leather and not the super fakey leather material that you sometimes see in faux leather/pu materials.  The pleats are nicely done and don't add any bulk.  I also really like the length it comes to on me, at just above the knee (I'm 5'7"). Also, if you have wider hips, you'll probably have enough room in this skirt to be comfortable.  The exposed zip in the back adds a fun, rock and roll vibe to it, too.

That being said, I had a few minor issues with this skirt.  Firstly, it isn't lined as I was expecting it to be (especially because it's a fall/winter skirt).  Some of you might appreciate no lining, but I prefer having it (personal preference and whatnot).  Also, the bottom hem isn't actually hemmed, it's just the cut edge of the fabric.  For the price, I kind of expected it to be lined and hemmed, but again, that's just me.  It also seems to run a bit bigger than the size chart measurements.  And there are no pockets (you know how much I love skirts with pockets, right?).

Overall though, it's a great quality and if you decide to purchase this skirt from SimplyBe, you'll be getting a great piece to wear through the next season and beyond.  Unfortunately this one is going back as I should've ordered a size US16. It's too big at the waist by a few inches, making it sit way too low on me.

If you're considering buying it, you can order it HERE.  For reference, the measurements of the US18 are as follows: waist: 43 inches; hips: 56 inches; length: 21.5 inches.  *(I had to pin this skirt for the pictures to show what it'd look like if it fit me properly.)

Next up, the Forever21+ Pleated Faux Leather Skirt in a US16.  It's currently offered online in sizes up to US16, but might be in stores up to a US20 (it was originally offered online up to a 20 as well).  The waist measurement on the US14 was listed as 37.5 inches, so I ordered the next size up, a US16.  The price is $24.80 (although I used the discount code in my sidebar and ordered a couple of other things, so I paid less and got free shipping).

lining // hem and fabric

I love this skirt, y'all!  Even though I paid less for it and it's from Forever21+, the quality is really great. The fabric/faux leather material feels a little bit thicker than the SimplyBe skirt, but it's still that nice, quality looking material that actually looks/feels like genuine leather.  I really love that the pleats are done in a skater-skirt style (personally one of my favorite types of skirts).  It's also a good length, a little bit shorter than the other skirt, but not too short to wear and get good use out of.  It's also fully lined and has a hem, which I also prefer.  This skirt also has the exposed zip in the back, too.

The only downsides for me about this skirt is there are no pockets (boo!) and it's pretty wrinkled from shipping (see the pics).  I'm not sure how I'll get the wrinkles out, and I'm kind of worried it'll wrinkle right back up as I'm wearing it. Hopefully that's not the case, but we'll see!  Does anyone have any de-wrinkle tips for me?  :)

Anyway, I love this skirt from Forever21+ and will definitely be keeping it.  The fit is perfect on me, the length is great, and it's a great deal.  Overall, it's pretty dang fantastic and I can totally see myself pairing it up with a sweater, tights and boots once the weather gets cooler.

If you're considering ordering it, you can purchase it HERE.  For reference, the measurements of the US16 are as follows:  waist: 39 inches; hips: 53 inches; length: 20.5 inches.

I'm so so glad that I jumped at the chance to try these skirts when I did.  I have a feeling the trend will continue to catch on and soon they'll all be snatched up!  Will you be joining in the faux leather skirt trend this upcoming season, too?  :)

**I purchased these skirts with my own money, and all of the opinions above are my own. I'm not being paid or compensated in any way for this post. I just wanted to share my experiences with both of these skirts in case you were thinking of getting one, too.  :) **

Whoohoo!  It's Wednesday and time for one of my favorite parts of the week: the Fatshion Faceoff!  (If you need a refresher on what the FF is, click the link at the top of the page.)  This week's challenge item was chosen by my awesome friend Hanna, and she picked... a denim skirt!  Now, if you've been following the blog for a while, you know that I've pretty much been living in denim skirts this summer.  I even chose two for my 30x30 picks, that's how much I love them.  They're just so versatile, ya know?  Anyway, are you ready for my take on this weeks Fatshion Faceoff?  Scroll on down to see how I styled my denim skirt this time!

No, you're not imagining it, I'm wearing jeans and a cardigan.  During the Texas summer.  Today was the rare gray day where I could sneak 'em both in, so I did!  It just really makes me wish that much more that fall would hurry up and get here, though.  *sigh*

cardi, UK20 - Dorothy Perkins | dog tee (also cute), UK22 - New Look | skinny jeans, 18 - Torrid

Anyway, today I thought it would be fun to try dressing up the standard cute tee and jeans combo. Kind of a fall fashion pre-test of sorts, I suppose.  Adding a sorta-fancy cardigan, a classic quilted bag, and jeweled flats did the trick (or at least I like to think so).  The guy helping me at the Apple Genius Bar kept smiling at me, so either my efforts made me look fabulous or ridiculous.  I'm assuming fabulous because he finagled a free replacement battery for my laptop (woot!) and saved me well over $200. Then again, maybe he just thought I could use all the help I could get, since I wear silly dog t-shirts with sparkly shoes and whatnot?  Either way, who knows.  Everything worked out just fine for me in the end, I mean, I managed to clothe myself and get a free battery.  Can't get much better than that.

Sorry for the mini absence y'all!  I've been busy trying to get the most out of the last few days of summer (before school starts for both me and The Kid).  This weekend I wanted to get a lot of loose things around the house tied up: unpacking, cleaning, organizing, and best of all, finally building my shoe shelves!  I'm doing them myself and custom fitting them to my closet. I still have to paint them, but once they're done, how cool will that be?  I'm like handy and stuff.

Anyway, today we left the chores at home to run around town for a bit.  We visited the library (because I finally finished The Hunger Games and wanted to pick up Catching Fire) and we also stopped by the post office near the oldy-time square in town.  The post office is actually part of the main central park/civic center, so we took a stroll through.  Why not, right?  And actually, I'm glad we did!  There was a cool building tucked away in the park designed by an architect named O'Neil Ford who, from what I've read, is one of the great "unknown" architects.  Apparently he's famous here in Texas, but not so much anywhere else.  Which is a bummer, because his buildings remind me a lot of Frank Lloyd Wright's and that cool early/mid-century style that I love so much.  It kinda makes me wish I had a knack for math, because building buildings seems like fun! But I'm really pretty horrible at all things numerical, so I guess I'll stick to building simple shoe shelves instead.  ;)

So, as you may have realized (or not, but it's ok), for the last Fatshion Faceoff post I wound up making my own neon necklace.  I've been meaning to make one for forever.  Seriously, I've had this necklace from Forever21 in my To DIY box (yes, I have one of those) for like months and months (or so it feels).  I've been wanting to turn it into a Tom Binn's-esque creation because, well, his stuff is fun and funky and bright, but also hundreds of dollars.  I saw a similar DIY for it here a while back on one of my favorite blogs, so I wanted to share the awesomeness and easiness of this project with you guys.  Especially since mine is peter pan collar one, I thought it'd be extra fun (your's can be any shape you want, though, so don't stress).  Let's go make it! --->

Y'all, it's Wednesday and that means it's time for another Fatshion Faceoff!  Today's challenge item was chosen by LuAnne, and she picked... a neon accessory!  I don't really have that many neon accessories, so I decided to DIY one!  I've had this rhinestone necklace from Forever21 for forever, and have been intending to do a Tom Binns interpretation with it, so this challenge was the perfect kick in the butt to finally get around to making it!  Wanna see?

What do you think?  Doesn't it look pretty cool?  I especially love the peter pan shape of it, don't you? If you're curious about how I made it and maybe want to make one of your own, click here for the DIY tutorial! :)  But also make sure you clickety click on the links below to see how the other Fatshion Faceoff girls styled their neon accessories!

When I saw this dress in the Dorothy Perkins sale, I had to have it.  It reminds me of that striped Prada dress that was everywhere last summer, although the colors in mine aren't as vivid.  But I don't care, it's super cute and I know I'll get multiple seasons' use out of it.  Today I wore it with a straw tote, sunnies, and cute flats, but come fall, I can see it paired with black tights, a pretty cardigan, and maybe my heeled oxfords or boots.  Now we just need some cool sweater weather to go with the cute outfit I've just thought up.  ;)

I totally got photobombed by a neighborhood cat, omg. Good thing it left before I started sneezing! :D

My boyfriend calls this "fancy hair".  I don't know why, I mean it's just a simple hot-day hairdo that's just a little different than my usual topknot bun thing.  Maybe that's why it's fancy, because it's different?  Either way, it's hilarious that once again he thinks I'm fancy.  I don't think he usually notices what I'm wearing or whatnot, so I try to take it as a compliment when he does!  :)

In other news, my buddy Cara and I had another Tumblr Twin Day!  Fun, right?  You should check out here blog by clicking here, she's pretty darn fabulous.  :)

Doesn't this stone wall look like the backdrop for an awesome stage production, like Romeo and Juliet or The Nutcracker or something?  Add in my new bejeweled flats (inspired by these) and the fact that this shirt always makes me feel like a ballerina, and you can pretty much guess that I almost started dancing in front of this wall.  Now, I don't know if you know this about me, but I studied ballet as a little girl (we're talking like 1st-3rd grade-ish).  I even still have my tiny ballet slippers, and they are completely worn through!  I must've loved it, that's for sure.  Now I just need to find a tutu for my grown self so I can start twirling again..
